    Margarethe Schurz starts the first kindergarten in the United States
  • Infant School Opens in England

    Elizabeth Peabody begins an infant school in New Lanark, England in effort to promote social reform for children for working parents in his mills.
  • First Public School in North America

    The first public school started in in Ontario, Canada.
  • National Association for Nursery Education (NANE) Founded

    Patty Smith formed the National Committee on Nursery Schools. It was later changed to NANE and finally to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
  • U.S. Department of Education calls for National Intervention

    Announces the Year of Elementary School creates a new policy on early intervention for children starting from infants to school age.
  • USA-Leave No Child Behind Law

    Approved federal programs to improve the quality of public schools performance by directing state test for grant funding schools. Also, the law increased qualifications for teachers.
